News Break - So long, Simon

A mere 7 days before the premiere of "American Idol", the cantankerous - but always right - Simon Cowell has announced that Season 9 will be his last.

Cowell, the driving force behind Britain's hit "The X Factor", is bringing a version to the U.S. in the fall of 2011. He'll serve as a judge on the show as well as executive producer.

"The X Factor" is a talent competition that finds new stars in a variety of entertainment fields, not just music. The show has no age limit and groups are allowed to apply. Pause it: I can see it now - a group of Susan Boyle wannabes doing spoken word performances. The judges are also responsible for mentoring the talent.

Hopefully with Simon leaving, this will be the death of "Idol". I liked the show until they allowed the dreadful Taylor Hicks into the Top 12. Then I dropped in from time to time to see the audition shows. We all figured "Idol" could survive without Paula Abdul, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Ellen DeGeneres will bring to the show. But no Simon Cowell? That's like "Sesame Street" with no Big Bird.

  1. Dude! You know Taylor was the best thing ever on AI, don't you? The most authentic musician and soul singer to grace the stage! Season 5 was the highest grossing tour and highest rated season. There's a reason for that - check him out at taylorhicks.com.

  2. I liked Taylor Hicks during the audition process and I don't deny he was a nice change of pace. But eventually, his jerky movements and dancing became a distraction.

And while he may have had a successful run on "Idol," he's one of the few winners that have been dropped by his record label. I'm just sayin'...

  3. Taylor Hicks has been very successful since AI. He released a second CD on his own label, and is of course performing on Broadway in 'Grease'. He was nominated for a Tony award. "I'm just sayin'" that being nominated for a Tony equals success in my book. He just released a concert DVD. Maybe you should do some research before you rely on your own uninformed personal opinion to write your blog. Season 5 AI had the highest TV ratings of the DECADE. In case your not aware, season 5 is the season Taylor Hicks took the crown. Just sayin', Okay?

  4. labelle, I can appreciate your arguement, but in terms of "American Idol" winners, Taylor Hicks has the worst album sales out of all previous winners. That's not uninformed, that's fact. Even Jennifer Hudson and David Archuleta have sold more albums than Hicks.

Like I said, no one is denying he's talented, but it was obvious he wasn't going to have the same commercial appeal or fan base as Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson or Chris Daughtry.

  5. Who cares about commercial appeal? All Hicks needed was a little support which he did not get.
But he brought the music, the talent and the sexiness. Hes the only one I have ever followed and hes great.

  6. Anonymous, I would say commercial appeal is very important for an artist's success after the show. People voted for Taylor Hicks en masse, yet his album sales were the worst out of all winners. I'm glad he's still able to make music through his own label. But like I said, in context of "American Idol" (and my opinion), Hicks is the black mark on their record.
